I got to be apart of the wonderful launch of Kiki and Boo and was blown away at how awesome this party concept is! It seriously is a must have for any kids party.
I was so impressed I wanted to find out more about her clever business and asked her a few questions…
So Jen, tell me a little bit about yourself…
I am newly 34 (however I still feel like I’m in my early 20’s) I am a wife to an amazing hubby Mike, I am a mommy to two gorgeous (but feisty) angel girls, Sienna (Boo) is three and Kiera (Kiki) is one. I love everything about being a mommy, especially bed time…after which I can put my feet up with a glass of vino!! (Just kidding) But jokes aside, I love my family, and spending quality time together, I love hanging out with my friends and wish we could spend more time together, life is a bit busy for us all at this stage in our lives, but when we get together, laughing, talking, eating…my heart is happy. I love God and wish I went to church more then I do, I am trying to teach my girls about how much God loves them and all about Jesus. Other than that..Im just your ordinary 30 something year old living in good ol Durbs.
Kiki and Boo is such a clever business. Tell me more about it and how it all came about…
My new business venture came about because my Nephew Christian and daughter Sienna are suddenly OBSESSED with all things GEMS, they were talking about them constantly…and fighting over the pittance that Christian would find at school….I would dread fetching him from school because he would have a small Gem in his hand….which would mean Poor Boo would be distraught as there was not one for her, and we would have tears ALL THE WAY HOME! So Boo’s birthday was coming along and I thought it would be a good idea to do a Diamond Diggings Party (which it was called back in my day!) I called everyone and looked everywhere for a party venue that would do this to no avail….there was NOWHERE in Durban that did this….NOWHERE….so…LIGHTBULB moment, I thought to myself, Hey I can do this, I can be this person. I did some research and fast forward a few months later and here we are! Kiki & Boo #finderskeepers was born.
What is the best thing about your job?
I love the flexibility of it, that it doesn’t consume my every day so that I get to spend a lot of time with my girls and my nephew.
What is your best party theme?
To be honest, Just the Gems on their own, so simple yet just the most fun…Seeing the kiddies finding these beautiful colourful Gems and watching their faces light up when they pop them into their bags and realise they are getting to keep what they find is so precious, they are just so excited.
Any advise for parents organizing their kids party?
I would have to say, not to leave the booking of any sort of entertainment to the last minute…I learnt this the hard way (after telling Sienna what type of party she was getting and then not being able to follow through…BAD MOVE)
What would you say is the top 3 must haves at any party?
Ok so I asked Sienna what her favourite three things at a Birthday party are….she says…CAKE, sweets, Diamonds and Gems hahaha thanks Sienna for the support!!! For me, What I have learnt in my three short party throwing years…Instead of losing our heads trying to get the ‘perfect’ kiddies party, try keeping it simple, so its not overwhelming for both mom and the little one.
1. ICE LOLLIES rock… I will always always have Ice Lollies at my girls parties. Whether it be hot or cold they LOVE an Ice Lollie.
2. CAKE…. kids LOVE cake time! They love watching the candles been blown out and they love singing happy birthday (well Sienna does, this is her FAVOURITE part of the day at a party!) so a beautiful cake is a must!
3. Having a back up plan in case of bad weather, rain or wind can really ruin a beautiful boho themed outside party!!!
Tell us something we don’t know about you?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm….this is a toughie…what do people not know about me….I love Jack Johnson so much its bordering on an obsession…. and, I would LOVE to learn how to surf, but I’m scared of being dumped by the waves haha
Do you have any tips for someone wanting to take that leap and start their own business?
The thing I’ve learnt is to stop thinking and overthinking, and talking about it, wondering and second guessing…and just do it, take the bull by the horns and JUST DO IT….do your research, figure it all out and then throw yourself in completely, you cant do it half heartedly, just believe in yourself and go for it.
